2010 TOUR DE LANGKAWI FINAL STAGE SHORTENED TO EASE TRAFFIC WOES

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The 2010 Le Tour de Langkawi’s final stage in Kuala Lumpur (criterium race) will be shortened from seven to six rounds to ease traffic congestion, says the Chief Executive Officer of Asia’s biggest cycling event, Mohamed Salleh.

“We have reduced the number of rounds for the race in Kuala Lumpur so that traffic flow can resume sooner,” he told Bernama here Wednesday.

The organizer of the prestigious event, the only one in Asia granted two hors-category — from March 1 to 7, the Youth and Sports Ministry, would be inviting world class teams and riders to compete here, so that the level of competition would be high.

Mohamed said a number of initiatives would be taken to make the race more challenging right from the start, for example, the first stage would be from Kota Baharu to Kuala Berang in the northerastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, a distance of 174.5 km.

He added that although the overall budget for the race had been reduced from 10 million Ringgit (one USD = about 3.4 Ringgit) to 7.5 million Ringgit, it would not affect the quality of the tour.

“We will maintain the quality of the tour so that it can match the other renowned cycling tours in the world. In fact, our target is to make it the best tour,” he said. “As organizers, we hope corporate sponsors will come forward to do their part in making the tour a success.”

The 1,001.8-km event, to be held over seven stages, is scheduled to start in Kota Bharu in Kelantan and pass through the states of Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, the Federal Capital Territory of Putrajaya, and Selangor before ending at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. — NNN-BERNAMA

Awana Porto Malai

image

It's official Langkawi is paradise. Clear waters, beautiful hotels and of course the fact that it is duty-free just makes it all the sweeter.

Although a tourist hotspot, it is not overcrowded nor is it too overly commercialised. Four days in Langkawi leaves one just hankering for more.

It was this reporter's third visit to the island and this time, residence was at Awana Porto Malai, a premier 4-star resort destination.

Built on 14 acres of reclaimed land, the hotel even has its own private marina, for the rich and famous to dock, perhaps!

The resort is especially handy for those who are sticklers for privacy straight off the yacht and into the hotel. It doesn't get anymore private than that!

Arriving at the hotel on a Tuesday afternoon, the weather was not quite as hoped. Unfortunately for those who might have hoped to get a healthy tan on the island that week, the gods seemed to be favouring rain.

So anyone in their miniscule clothing was freezing their butts off. No use sun-tanning when it was raining, so perhaps a tour of the resort would be nice?

Stepping into the room was a pleasant surprise. The room was really big and airy, not one of those 'space conserving, modern design' nonsense we see so much of nowadays.

One of the best features is the fact that the windows were huge and they gave a beautiful view of the ocean. Some of the furniture though, were slightly worn out, which is normal for a hotel which has been around for more than a decade.

It also gives Awana Porto Malai that nostalgic touch After checking out the room (and bathroom, which was satisfactory), it was time for the tour. From the spa to the dining outlets, even though it was not oozing luxury, the place had a quaint charm about it, and they even had a gift shop located along the boardwalk that does not charge cutthroat prices!

What makes it really different from the other hotels though, is that it does not only cater to tourists who are there for leisure but it also has meeting facilities and is equipped for conferences and exhibitions.

Since the hotel was built on reclaimed land and had a marina, it lacked a beach. A hotel in langkawi without a beach? Well, there are big plans in store for Awana.

'The beach issue' will be solved sometime end of this year or early next year as the management is getting the rights to the island located across the hotel which will be converted into a private beach for the hotel guests.

Yeah, that's right. Forget beaches. Awana will soon have an island of its own! There will be deck chairs and even a bar located on the island and there will be regular ferry trips provided by Awana from the hotel to the island.

Pity this trip was a little too early, but maybe later is fine. Also in the pipeworks is a new entertainment joint located on the resort, called Eagle Rock Cafe. With a live band, food and drinks, it is set to be 'the' place to be.

After the tour, it was time for dinner. Now, hotel food has always fallen into the cliche of being expensive and not all that great.

However, Awana Porto Malai did not disappoint. Dinner that night was at Villa Rossi, an Italian restaurant tucked away into a quiet corner of the hotel. As you step into the restaurant, you may feel like you have been transported back in time.

The ambience made for a quiet romantic dinner and the quaint setting of the restaurant and the glow of warm lighting sets the mood for love (yeah, yeah...but its true!). The set dinner goes for RM60.

It consists of a salad, soup, main course and dessert which is great value for money and absolutely delicious. The presentation for the dessert was a true masterpiece. Fortunately, the taste was not disappointing either.

After some good food and rest, there was island hopping the next day. Having to set out at 9.30am meant that one had to wake up at 8.30am. After getting ready and slathering on about 5 million SPFs worth of sunblock, you'd be ready for island hopping. Oops, breakfast first.

Of all the things at Awana, the buffet breakfast was the low point. It lacked in variety. There was an omelette station but the line was moving at a snail's pace.

There were some beef bacon which looked like they had seen better days and the usual baked beans normal breakfast stuff. Now, off to island hop!

The sunblock was pretty redundant, as it was overcast and drizzling. First stop was Dayang Bunting. Within that island there is a freshwater lake, supposedly with magical properties. Don't take a swim in the lake, especially if you are not ready for kids.

No, it doesn't mean you get to have sex on the island. Legend has it that women who go dipping in the lake will increase their fertility rate! Some claim that the water's pH level will influence the pH level of the woman's body, making it very susceptible to... well, conception.

The mystery of the island is also that no matter what, the water level of the lake has never dropped. If you are planning to go to this island, one word of warning monkeys. They are everywhere and they pick your pockets, bags and whatever belongings you have.

If you are wearing bright colours (its Langkawi! Everyone wears bright colours here), the monkeys will love you. If you feed them, you are a masochist asking for punishment.

The rest of the island hopping involved watching the boatmen feed the eagles as well as a stop on another island where one can indulge in watersports or just a tad of sun-tanning or swimming.

Returning to the hotel after a tiring morning, the Javanese inspired Spa seemed to be calling this reporter. Currently running a promotion of a discounted price of 40 per cent, it was just too much for a girl to resist. Book the two-hour 'ancient healing experience' as it was heaven!

A massage, body scrub as well as body mask and a traditional herbal drink proved to be a great pick-me-up.
It was then time for dinner at Zest, another restaurant at the hotel. There were tables set on the boardwalk and dinner was complemented with a beautiful view of the sea.

Seeing that it was the start of the 'seafood galore' promotion, our dinner consisted of grilled prawns, lobster
thermidor, soft-shelled-crab and squid. The food was excellent and a special recommendation would be the grilled tiger prawns.

The prawns were enormous, fresh and sweet. Grilling it brought out the natural flavour of the crustacean, which was a very good flavour indeed and it was very reasonably priced.

The last two days in Langkawi were spent in a flurry. First, a rush to Kuah town which was a RM28 ride away from Awana to buy duty-free stuff.

Then, taking a walk along Pantai Cenang, a RM12 ride away from the hotel, to pick seashells (all of 12). Lunch was in a cafe called Yellow Cafe along the beach which must be visited if you're ever in Langkawi.

It had couches and cushions as well as hanging chairs. A nice place to be and the food was good too! To sum it up, Langkawi is a laid-back town for some rest, relaxation and an all-round good time. Would Awana Porto Malai be recommended as a place to stay? Definitely.

The hotel is rustic and while not overtly indulgent, it is sufficient and you probably get more value than you pay for. With the new 'private beach' and entertainment spot, Awana Porto Malai is set to be the hotel to watch out for on the island!

Island Of The Pregnant Mermaid

Pulau Dayang Bunting (Island Of The Pregnant Mermaid) is the second largest island of the Langkawi archipelago, second only to Pulau Langkawi itself. Located at a distance of about 17.6 km from Kuah Town, Pulau Dayang Bunting is accessible from Kuah Jetty or Pantai Cenang through a 15 minute boat ride.

The island derives its name from Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), the largest lake on Langkawi. The lake and the island are shrouded in legend. Tales of Mambang Sari and Mat Teja's ill-fated love story loom over one's mind as one cools off in the scintillating waters of the lake. The story of Mat Teja's courtship of his beloved and their sweet romantic endeavors take the tourists back into the world of nymphs and genies. Their love child did not survive long and the anguished mother bid her son farewell. The child is believed to have assumed the form of a white crocodile as she placed him in his watery grave. This crocodile guards the lake till date, natives hold, and is said to appear only to the pure at heart. Mambang Sari, overflowing with maternal affection and distraught at such a fortuity, blessed the waters that took her son into their fold with magical qualities. Since then, the natives believe that a sip of the waters of Tasik Dayang Bunting endows fertility to any childless woman.

Gua Langsir (Cave of the Banshee), located on the western shore of the island, is another major attraction of the island. The natives superstitiously believe the existence of a banshee haunting the interiors of this dark cave. However the name may also be associated with the banshee like wail created by the howling of the wind. Many attribute this wail purely to the acoustics of the cave. Thousands of bats are known to inhabit this cave. The Gua Langsir is located stop a 91 m limestone hillock, about 8 km north of the only jetty. This jetty has been fashioned in a small cove to aid tourists alight their boats before proceeding to explore the Pulau Dayang Bunting.

Pulau Dayang Bunting is famed for the mangrove swamplands and the dense tropical rainforests it encompasses. A vast variety of birds such as the kite, woodpecker, hornbill, drongo and kingfisher nest here and Pulau Dayang Bunting the ornithologist's Eden.

Langkawi Map

Langkawi Map

The Langkawi Island lie in the Andaman sea , just 30 kilometers off the Kedah coast. There are 99 island in the Langkawi group most of which are uninhabited or sparsely populated. The largest and most developed island - known as Langkawi - is the focal point for most visitors. Traditionally the islanders have relied upon the farming and fishing industries for their livelihood, but in 1987 they were awarded Duty Free status, and the subsequent increase in visitors has promoted tourism to the point of being the islands largest industry.

The natural scenic beauty of Langkawi is still its main attraction however. It has splendid beaches, cascading waterfalls and virgin rainforest. These natural attractions coupled with picturesque fishing villages, rolling rice field and the more recent shopping and entertainment facilities combine to create an atmosphere of enjoyment and relaxation.

Getting To Langkawi

Langkawi's designated Duty Free Port

Duty Free

Langkawi's designated Duty Free Port status makes shopping here quite fun and very popular. It carries the largest selection. Enjoying duty free status within Malaysia makes Langkawi a great place to pick up some superb bargains during your holiday, although it is neither as cheap, nor is there as much variety as you will find in Kuala Lumpur. There is a large mall called Langkawi Fair, where you can pick up the best bargains, and one of the best places to go shopping for luxury goods is the Langkawi Parade, where you can browse the high-end boutiques. For souvenir hunting, it's a good idea to wander through the markets along the harbour front and pick up locally produced handicrafts such as Langkawi Craft Complex..
Let's check out what is on sale now!

7 Top Beaches in Malaysia

Perhentian Islands: You could argue that when Leonardo Di Caprio chose to shoot his movie “The Beach” in Thailand, he was not familiar with the stunning Perhentian Islands! Just off the east coast of Malaysia in North East Terengganu are two islands which are known as Perhentian Islands. They are a massive hit with tourists now due to their silver sandy beaches and their crystal clear blue waters. Perhentian Islands is arguably one of the most beautiful places on this earth.

Redang Island: Not far from Perhentian Islands is that of Redang. In total it comprises nine smaller islands. Among the east coast islands this is the largest and arguably the most developed too. Designated as a marine park it’s a fantastic place for divers and snorkelers to enjoy the collection of coral reefs and various marine life.

Langkawi Island: If you have heard about Malaysia as a tourist then you will also have heard about Langkawi. Langkawi Island is actually made up of ninety nine smaller islands and is host to some of the most luxurious hotels in all Malaysia. UNESCO recently awarded Langkawi Island with “geopark” status. For the tourist to Kuala Lumpur its only around forty minutes traveling distance so there is no excuse not to visit!

Pangkor Laut Island : Off the coast of Perak State, north of Selangor , lies a cluster of fabulous islands with unquestionably some of the best coves and beaches on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia. Among them, two islands predominate in terms of accessibility, infrastructure and development - the largest island, Pangkor and her sister Pangkor Laut. Upon the island of Pangkor Laut is the Pangkor Laut Resort which is renowned as one of the best hotels in Malaysia, if not the world. It has won a number of awards over the past decade and for this alone the islands are well worth a visit!

Tioman Island: This place is popular for its beautiful soft and sandy beaches, where a great collection of underwater creatures and coral reefs can be found. It is a magnificent location to go snorkeling and even hiking, and while you are there you can stay at the Japamala Resort.

Rawa Island: Only a few miles from Tioman Island and offering similar luxuries is that of Rawa Island. This is privately owned and there is only one hotel on the island which may seem very limiting. However, its very exclusive and somewhat untouched.

Sipadan Island: Rated as one of the top five diving spots in the world, Sipadan Island is situated just off the coast of Sabah, Borneo - Malaysia’s eastern island, and previously known as North Borneo. The island did have a reputation as being a hunting ground for pirates but now its known not for its piracy but for its wonderful and luxurious beauty

Swettenham International Ship Terminal To Boost State Economy

The official opening of the new international passenger ship terminal at the Swettenham Pier International Cruise Terminal in February is expected to attract more tourists to Penang and thereby boost the state economy.

Chairman of the Penang Port Commission (PPC), Tan Cheng Liang, said the terminal, which has just been constructed and is under trials, could receive bigger cruise ships with tonnage up to 70,000 tonnes compared to the old terminal that could only receive ships up to 25,000 tonnes.

With the capabilty of the terminal to receive bigger ships, Tan said, the number of ship passengers staying over in Penang was expected to double.

"In 2008, 1,770 international and domestic ships brought in 621,559 passengers into Penang Port and if each passenger spent RM200 each, imagine the income that can be generated through this tourism sector," she told a news conference after welcoming passengers of the luxury cruise ship 'Superstar Libra' which made its maiden visit to the terminal here on Friday.

Superstar Libra, 216m in length with a gross weight of 42,276 tonnes and able to carry 1,472 passengers, is scheduled to stop at the terminal every two weeks.

Tan said the maiden visit of the cruise ship was not only as trial visit but was a symbol of the emergence of a new landmark in Penang.
Beside Superstar Libra other cruise ships expected to visit the terminal are the Superstar Virgo, the AIDAcara, the Amusement, and the biggest cruise ship in the world, the Queen Mary, in February.

"Besides that, the terminal also has facilities for passenger ferries that provide services between Penang and Langkawi and between Penang and Medan, Indonesia," she said.
The 15,000 sq. feet terminal also has new three-storey building that house Customs and Immigration offices, quarantine area and parking space for 18 buses and 48 taxis.
It also has 400m wharves and two dolphins for ships to berth.

The jetty was built since 2005 with a cost of RM65 million and can handle 100,000 passengers a day compared to the present one that handle 50,000 a day.
Before luxury cruise ships had to drop anchor away from the jetty and boats had to be used to transport passengers to land.

LANGKAWI ISLAND ADVENTURES

Langkawi Island Adventures

Wow, time is flying by! I looked at when I wrote last, and it was already over a week ago! I knew that as soon as I started working hard again and felt busy, that life would start to fly by! I can't believe its already mid November. And the rest of the month is going to go by faster than I'd like I think!
LANGKAWI
This past weekend I went to the island of Langkawi. It was like a proper 2 day Spring Break! One of the biggest perks about being in this part of the world is that you can be surrounded by big city life, dirty streets, loud buses flying by, and trash all over the streets, and then in 1 hour by flight, you can be in paradise! I found myself in paradise again this past weekend! Langkawi was beautiful and in my opinion, 10 times better than Tioman. Although Tioman is known around the world for its snorkling, Langkawi is more my style when it comes to a get-away! The island is quite large, so there is a lot to do. I heard of all the amazing things we could've done, but 2 days wasn't quite enough time to fit that in!
My roommates had asked if I wanted to go with the to the island the week I moved in, and my first question was, "Are other girls going as well?" They responded, "Yeah definitely". So i was like, "I'm in!" Of course boys are not going to have the same priorities as I will on an island vacation (working on my tan) so I need other girls there to hang out with! Well turns out, there were other girls that went, but they weren't particularily friendly so that was unfortunate. But, the guys were so much fun. I felt like their sister all weekend. I felt at home because they teased me and never let me get away with very seldom stupid things that I'd say. I had so much fun with them. And let me tell you, they know how to party.  The island has proper roads, which Tioman didnt, and there were so many restaurants and different beach bars, etc. But I can't compare Langkawi really to anywhere else I've been. Its not like beaches in FL, nor Mexico. But I loved it. It would be so easy for me to stay there for a week at least. I hope to make it back to the Island again, maybe before Christmas.

Pulau Langkawi-my favourite Holiday destination

I love Pulau Langkawi. It’s one of the most beautiful Island in the world, and also a duty free Island. I’ve been there few times -prefer to go by ferry so that I can get a closer look at d beautiful Andaman Sea on the way there. The water is so green and the atmostphere is so calm. Famous for it’s beautiful scenery as well as 99 other small sounding islands, Langkawi gets visitors from all over the world. Pantai Cenang is one of the most popular spots -and it’s the most ‘happening’ place in the island too.*wink*

AndamanAnyway on most of my visits I prefer to stay at Pantai Tengah -which is not far from Pantai Cenang , and more peaceful and quiet. I am not a party animal -so that’s explaining why I prefer these places. I’ve once stayed at Temoyong, which is quite secluded and has fantastic views. Wherever I stay -other than holiday, I love shopping in Langkawi. Because of it’s duty free status -you can get plenty of things , among others ~chocolocates, clothing, household items which includes corelle : ) much cheaper than the main lain. Not forgetting cigarettes and liquor. So it’s a shopping heaven for people like me ~ does does not please my other’s half  very much , though ,he he.

Food are relatively cheap too..specially seafood -they are fresh and there are plenty of sea food restaurans surrounding the island. You can take the cable car up to Gunung Macincang, go snorkeling, fishing and hire boats to get to those small islands -they are so amazing and beautiful ~ you wont regret.  Transportations are cheap  if you hire a car -but the secret is dont go during long public holiday i.e festives seasopn like Chinese New Year, Hari raya and school holidays and also end of the year -prices will definately go up-both accomodations and hiring cars -yo definately have to go deeper in your pocket.

To go to Langkawi you can take a flight straight from KL or any other place in the world -it’s realtively cheaper to go by air from KLIA now. Or you can also drive up to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, and take the boat from these two places. The journey is shorter from Kuala Perlis -about 45 minutes, but would be slightly longer from Kuala Kedah. Cars are available for rent at both place -airport and the Jeti. You have to bargain for best price. Used to pay for RM70 per day for a brand new Nissan Sentra . So do your homework :) .  You can get a luxury car at a relatively great price here -being a duty free place again -that is. So the idea of having a bridge connecting Pulau Langkawi and the mainland wont be that  great, right -it will probably be like Penang -which use to be duty free once -when I was very little.

A recommended holiday destination in a Malaysia -A must!

My favourite lunch place in ”Kuah town”

Love this place. Beautiful Thai restaurant owned by an ever smiling and sweet Thai Muslim lady who is mostly seen in the restaurant most days.
We often stop by Wan Thai for lunch at least once during our trips to Langkawi. It's good value for money, it's truly good Thai food and the service is always friendly. Two persons can eat well for RM70 (meal and drinks).
Our fave dishes here must be the otak-otak in coconut. We order this dish all the time. It's rich and flavourful, with enough seafood like prawns, squid and fish in a creamy and mild spiced curry base that's redolent of fresh coconut cream. Great with steamed rice.
The other dishes are commendable too....their Tomyam Seafood Soup is not too spicy, very well done unlike other places which get their spice levels wrong.
Don't forget to try their mango ice blended drinks. Thick and full of mango chunks.
Also, their Thai desserts are good too..... try them all. ;-) Yummy.

GUNUNG MAT CHINCANG (Mat Chinchang Mountain).

The view of Teluk Burau and Telaga Harbour at Pantai Kok with two cable cars are passing over.

Langkawi Cable car Experience

Included in a must visit place in Langkawi, the Langkawi Cable Car offers visitors a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view form “Gunung Mat Chinchang” (Mat Chinchang Mountain).

Located in at the southwest coast of Langkawi, the cable car entrance is located inside the Oriental Village which has duty free shops, cafes and a hotel to offer visitors. Tickets are sold at RM25.00 (Adult) and RM18.00 (Child) for a round trip.

The bubble shape cable cars will take you up the 45 degree incline ride. It covers a total distance of 2.2km linking the Base Station at the foothill of Mat Chinchang to the top most station call the Top Station with a total time of between 15-20 minute.

Along the route up one are able to see numerous geological features and species of flora and the breathtaking view of the famous Seven Wells Waterfall known locally as Telaga Tujuh.

There are a total of 2 viewing platforms on the top station. The platforms provide a 360 degree panoramic views of the seas, the many islands of Langkawi and even the neighbouring Thailand.

Another attraction on the mountain is the unique Curved Suspension Bridge. The steel bridge is an engineering marvel that really worth a visit.

To get there, one will have to disembark at the Top Station (second station) and head down on a short and well marked jungle trail.

The 125 metre curved bridge is suspended about 685 metres above sea level. Walking the curve path high above with the breathtaking view of the forest and to feel the bridge slightly swayed is fun and experience one can never forget.

My verdict….. The Langkawi Cable Car ride is a value for money and one should never miss if you visit Langkawi. Enjoy the fresh air, awesome view, trill and stunning sunset from Gunung Mat Chinchang. Its fun all the way!

Langkawi Eagle with LUMIX FZ30

Resized_P1000288

The eagle above is the landmark of Langkawi, Malaysia. You can’t miss it when you visit Langkawi. Shooting the eagle at night sometimes can be challenging. You can choose to use a higher ISO, say ISO800, but the photo will be grainy for a point and shoot. The other option is to have a longer exposure. With a longer exposure, you will be able to maintain low ISO (80 or 100), and your photo will still be sharp and clear.

One problem with longer exposure is, photo will be blur if you do not have a very stable hand (I mean a very very very stable hand), so you will need some help from a tripod. Set up a tripod, set your camera to Tv mode, then set the shutter speed to 1 second (or more). Another important thing is to set your camera with a 2 second timer, so when you press the shutter, you have enough time to leave your hand from the camera before the camera take the shot. You may need to try couple of times in order to get the best exposure. Try it out.

فيما يلي بعض من المعلومات لتحديد الصورة.

Below are some of the setting info for the photo.

Image Type: jpeg (The JPEG image format)
Width: 600 pixels
Height: 800 pixels
Camera Brand: Panasonic
Camera Model: DMC-FZ30
Exposure Time: 1/1 sec.
ISO Speed Rating: 80
Flash Fired: Flash fired, compulsory flash mode.
Metering Mode: Pattern
Exposure Program: Manual
Focal Length: 9.2 mm
